Laptop nightmares: Scary systems with fatal flaws

The Halloween season my be winding down, but that doesn't mean there aren't still plenty of scary laptops out there. Of course, the vastmajority of laptops we review are pretty decent examples of technology. After all, there are only a handful of common components used in most systems, and things such as speed and battery life are, if not standardized, at least largely predictable based on the list of what's inside the box.

That said, we occasionally run into a laptop that just rubs us the wrong way. Maybe it's a key missing feature, or terrible design, or an unusable touch pad--or sometimes products simply don't work as advertised. We've compiled our own list of the scariest laptops of 2010, the models that either had one or more frightening flaws, or else were just dogs.

Some of these are bargain basement budget systems, but don't think we're just picking on laptops that are cheap. We love inexpensive laptops, but not ones that cut so many corners that they're not a bargain at any price. Peruse our list below, and feel free to weigh in via the comments section with your own picks.

Centrino 2 notebook

Sony Expo Showcases Latest Tech

The annual Sony Hawaii Expo was held this week at the Ala Moana Hotel Hibiscus Ballroom. Highlight of this year’s Sony Expo was the desktop Sony OLED flatscreen TV (shown above). The hallmark of this high tech wonder is its small size and crystal clear high definition picture. The screen itself is thinner than a compact disc jewel case.

Another hyped product at the Sony Hawaii Expo is the new Sony Rolly MP3 player. It is a new portable device that is shaped like a little barrel and moves to the beat of the music. The speakers on this device are positioned at both ends and open up with winglike flaps on each end. The device will not be marketed in the U.S. and is aimed only at consumers in Japan. If it were sold in the U.S. the price would be at around $400.

Face recognition “smile” technology for Sony Cybershot cameras were also a new this year. The new Cybershots can sense when a person smiles and fires only at that time. People were happily smiling for the demo at the Sony Cybershot booth. There were many other Cybershot digital still and video cameras that were also on display for consumers to play with.

I was most interested in the small super zoom, SLR-like cameras that I may want to get in an effort to find a capable SLR-like digital camera without all of the weight and bulk.

Last year’s hot product, the Sony Playstation 3 was almost like a has-been this year. Yes, there were displays of the venerable Playstation 3 for people to use, but the crowds around those stations were not very big. Sony is still marketing the Playstation 2 which is still the most popular game console of all time, despite Nintendo running away with the market lead on their new generation Wii product.

I am still interested in perhaps getting a Sony PSP, mainly for the fact that it can surf the web with its wireless internet feature. Another wifi device that was touted last year, the Sony Mylo, was nowhere to be seen this year. Sony still sells the device.

HDTV are the big products Sony is pushing this year as the Expo was dominated by flatscreen high definition sets all over the place. Going hand in hand with that were several Sony Blu-Ray HDTV DVD players. the pictures on the sets and from the players are incredibly clear.

Don’t know if I am ready to sink money in either of these technologies, especially Blu-Ray since it is locked in a format war with the rival HD-DVD. Beta vs. VHS all over again. I’ll wait for the dust to settle on this one.

Overall the Sony Expo was a great little venue to check the latest technology from one of the most popular electronic companies on the face of the earth.

Latest technology in science, engineering and computer industry

Knowledge and use of mechanical arts and science is called technology. It actually is a broad term, which encompasses in it the information dealing with how one uses the available tools and crafts to create something somehow controls and becomes a part of his environment. We somehow relate technology with science, engineering and computers which however is not quite correct because technology can be involved in arts, architecture, agriculture, in economical development and wherever we can see involvement of machinery, hardware and utensils becoming a part of systems and techniques of an organization.

For different time periods different things can be called technology. For stone age prehistoric people invention of fire and wheel was technology, for middle age people the horse and donkey carts were technology and for us the next generation cars, planes, ships and other vehicles were technology. The progress in the scientific technology has been beyond explanation. Being able to sit at home and surf through hundreds of channels at one time just by sitting in front of the television, with the help of a remote only is technology, Switching on lights and music system by a simple click of a remote is technology; burning of a stove just by turning the knob to open is technology. In short wherever we look, we are surrounded with technology. May it be schools, banks, offices, or even the local grocery store. Since our childhood we were always told that the solar system comprises of nine planets revolving around the huge ball of fire, the sun .it is technology in the field of astronomy, which has now led us to know that the ninth planet, Pluto, is not actually a planet. It is technology only, which has led man to reach not only moon but also mars.

The latest and the most in demand technology these days are the mobile phones. They not only help you keep in touch with the user at all times but offer entertainment as well. The mobile phones these days are a complete entertainment package. They not only let you talk, send messages but also listen to mp3 songs, watch the videos, take digital pictures, use the calendar, the calculator and the alarm clock. Cell phones are a must these days. They are a necessity. The latest technological development in the cell phones is the use of GPRS, which allows you to use internet on your cell phones. You can send emails, chat on messengers or just surf for latest ring tones, wallpapers and themes for your cell phones.

There was a time when computer was the latest technology but now information technology, an entirely new field that is completely different exists. The field of Information technology is being developed on a day-to-day basis. It has opened up many job opportunities for the people at large. The field of information technology has brought a great relief to the youngsters of today by preventing them from being jobless instead become bread earners for their family. The beauty of this field is that all you need to do is become IT certified, get to a few computer languages and become a member of the fast advancing world. It helps you become a part of the rat race for success. Keeping updated about technology is no big deal as all you got to do is get online and type the correct word for the search.

With the passage of time advances are being made in the fields of science, engineering and computers in order to keep up with the pace of the developing world we have to keep ourselves updated regarding the latest technology. Being updated with the latest technology helps you get an edge over other people for getting jobs and if already employed you will get better opportunities for sure. For better job status you have to continuously strive hard and keep on updating your technological knowledge.

The Computer Business

I don’t know if this is just a myth, but someone told me before that Steven Spielberg have concept movies that he had purposely delayed because the technology still did not exist to visualize them, and that his house is full of work just lying around and waiting to be finished.

Yesterday I answered a thread in one of the forums about the state of technology 20 years ago, and it had sparked many things.

First of all I remembered some of the utilities I tried to program but never finished because of the limited technology. Like Steven Spielberg, some of my work remained as a concept.

So going back to 20 years ago, here are some trivia I think some of you might find amusing:

• Almost every program was DOS based. There was already Windows 3.0 but only has two colors (black and white).

• No internet yet, but there is something called a BBS or a Bulletin Board System. You have to dial up to their server.

• Mouse connects to the computer’s serial port and not PS2. No USB yet.

• Monitors were placed on top of casings

• The most popular word processor was Wordstar and Lotus 123 for spreadsheets

• Diskettes and hard disks are 5.25 inch wide.

• Intel and AMD processors were named 286, 386, and 486. Intel released Pentium, Pentium II, Pentium III then Pentium IV while AMD continued with 586 then proceeded with Athlon, Duron and Sempron

• Computer speeds ranged from 4.7 mhz to 8mhz, memory modules are 1 megabyte, and hard disks ranged from 5, 10, and 20 megabytes. Now it’s all in gigabytes, and some terabytes.

• There are switches (dip switch) on the motherboard that can disable the keyboard, and only a few of us knows about this in school. We switch it off so that they will think that the PC is defective. We are the only ones who know how to fix it therefore we always have a PC reserved for us.

• 3D games already existed, but only in vectors with two colors. Outrun is one of them featuring the car Testarossa.

Well, there are a lot more trivia but only an old dog like me can appreciate them because it has been a part of my youth and it is like a trip on memory lane.

It is also a vital ingredient in my plans for the future because as I said, during those days I have developed some programs that were put on hold because of technology limitations. But now that everything is just a click away, I can now go back to my old concepts and bring them to life.

A New Laptop - Notebook Computer

Do you want to buy a Laptop but don’t know how to, don’t worry we’ll help you out. Buying a new Laptops or Notebook Computers might get difficult for you if you are not familiar with them.

You first have to decide if all the latest technology is important for you?

Do you really need all new notebook technology? But first you have to figure out why you want a Laptop? Why are you buying it? What tasks you want to perform on your laptop?

I you want a Notebook just for web browsing and emailing then a laptop made few years before will suitable for you and it will also cost you less.

So what do you need the laptop for?

Do you need a lightweight portable laptop for business trips or meetings? Or you want a student notebook for classes? Or just want to replace your desktop computer with a Notebook that you can easily move around in your home?

In my case, I want to replace my desktop that I could easily move around my home and take out infrequent trips or vacations. Long battery life was not a major issue as I would be using it while plugging into an electrical outlet. Besides, the laptop I want would be 7 or 8 pounds and I have no problem carrying my Notebook around over any great distance.

As I work as a Full time Graphic Designer too so I need a machine with a lot of RAM, a Multi Drive DVD and a wide screen display are also important for some Entertainment. On other hand High quality graphics and sound are also a need.

RAM

RAM or Random Access Memory is perhaps the most important factor to consider when buying your laptop or any computer. The speed of your laptop or computer is greatly determined by RAM.

You must have to make sure that you have enough RAM so that it can process your tasks and graphics rapidly. You can now find many laptops pre-loaded with 1 Gig of RAM and capable of upgrading to 4 Gigs or more.

Also to mention that if you are gaming fan, Video RAM will be important and you need a top line Graphics Card which will increase your laptop’s cost. I advise you to buy a laptop with upgradeable memory - since new applications, multi windowed browsers, streaming video...of the very near future may place high demand on your laptop's RAM.

Dual Core Processors

CPU is the heart of your laptop and in this case you have Two Hearts - Intel Centrino Duo is most common today. However, AMD is also giving some tough competition for Intel in the dual core battle by launching Athlon™ 64 X2 dual core processor. You can choose between both of them.

Hard Drive

A 100 or 120 Giga Byte hard drive in laptops is now common. But if you don’t want that much you can choose a small one. I recommend you to choose a SATA hard drive with a high 5400 or 7200 RPM (Revolutions per minute).

Weight or Size

A common reason to buy laptop is due to its weight or size and portability – otherwise you can save your money by buying a Desktop PC. A laptop offers portability you can move it anywhere tucking under your arm and cart it to class or your next business meeting. It is ideal to carry your information and work along with you anywhere. This portability is the main
selling feature of a laptop.

You can pick up a Laptop’s according to your requirement. Laptops are divided into different categories, here's a quick overview:

Tablet PC (smallest) Size of a paper tablet or notepad, less than 3 pounds.

Ultra Portable (small) <11" x <10" Less than 1.3 inches thick, less than 4 pounds.

Thin and Light (mid-size) 11-14" x <11" 1 to 1.4 inches thick, from 5 to 7 pounds.

Desktop Replacements (largest) >13" x >11" More than 1.5 inches, more than 7 pounds and up.

Price

Well it totally depends on your pocket and requirement the more technology you add, more you have to pay.

Warranties

Don’t ignore this feature , you must confirm extended warranties, If you do a lot of traveling, you might need insurance against thief and loss.

Dead Pixel

If you want to check your laptop screen for dead pixels, just do a search for the free 'Dead Pixel Buddy' software program and run it to check your laptop for dead pixels.

Search For Laptops Over Internet

You must shop and search around and check out the consumer reports on the different laptop makers and the different laptop products. You must also check out the service records/reputation of the major brand names.

Make A List Of Features

Creating a list of minimum requirements for your Notebook might help you getting your hands on your desired laptop:

For Example:

Intel Duo

2 Gig of RAM

150 Gig Hard Drive

15 Inch Screen

4 or 5 Hours Battery Life

DVD Writer/Burner

A Full and Final Checkout

You must fully checkout your laptop before purchase. Check the comfort of your Laptop keyboard. Try the touchpad, is it responsive? Open your favorite programs and check the processing speed of your laptop. Bring along a DVD and sample the sound and graphics.

If you consider and check out the factors listed above then you can have a good laptop for you. So, Do a little homework and you will easily find the perfect laptop for you.
